For less than $500 getting a 3-in-1 machine is a real bargain. And that’s what you get with the Lotos CT520D. It combines a stick and TIG welder with a plasma cutter. Here is what I think about the machine.

Firstly, it’s an impressive machine for its price. And with an output of 200 amps, it packs quite a punch. The plasma cutter has an output of 50 amps which is enough to cut through ½ inch thick metal.

While it has a max output of 200 amps, you can turn it down to 15 amps. This means it is capable of welding thinner sheets of metal. Unfortunately, this is a DC only machine, so if you have plans of welding aluminum, this is not for you.

All the same, it is capable of welding steel, stainless steel, copper and alloy steel. As for the plasma cutter, you can use it to cut steel, copper and even aluminium. Also, it has dual voltage capabilities and can use either a 110v or a 220v power outlet.

why we like this model

  • Is a three in one machine that comes packed with a stick/TIG welder and plasma cutter
  • Measuring 17 x 8 x 11 inches and weighing about 38 pounds it is quite lightweight and portable.
  • The machine is very well built for a machine in its price range
  • Is compatible with a foot pedal which is purchased separately
  • Can be plugged into a 110v power outlet or a 220 v power outlet

  • Is a DC only welding machine and cannot weld aluminum
  • The cables that come with this machine are rather small

This is an excellent machine for the price. At just under $500 it is great for TIG welding steel, copper, stainless steel. Also, the fact that you can use it as a plasma cutter is a big plus. Not forgetting that its capable of being used for stick welding.

Good things come in small packages. This is definitely true about the Yes welder TIG-205DS TIG welder. A small and lightweight welder offered at an affordable price. But how does it compare with its competitors?

In my analysis of this welder, there are a couple of things that delighted me. Firstly its amperage range of 15 to 200 amps. This is sufficient for welding thicker sheets of metal. However, it can also handle thin sheets of metal.

In terms of versatility, it is more versatile than the pricier Lotos model. As it is an AC/DC welding machine capable of TIG and stick welding. In regards to power input, it can use either a 110v or a 220v power socket, which is always a plus.

The accessories that come with this unit are a big plus as well. You get a TIG torch gun, an electrode holder, work clamp as well as a transfer plug.

why we like this model

  • The amperage range of 15 to 200 amps is sufficient for welding thin gauge metal as well as thick sheets of metal
  • Comes with automatic voltage fluctuation protection to protect it against over-voltage, under-voltage and over-current
  • The LCD helps in the display of amperage settings
  • Weighing about 23 pounds, it is a lightweight welding machine
  • The machine can be used with either a 110v or a 220v power source

  • Does not have a foot pedal for controlling amperage easily
  • May have durability problems due to its lightweight design

Thanks to its compact and lightweight design, it is an ideal tool for professional and home use. Its power output is excellent as well. While it lacks a plasma cutter, this isn’t a big deal breaker. Also, the fact that it works with both AC and DC makes up for this. In terms of overall quality, it is the best tig welder for beginner.

NOTE: If you can afford extra buck then you can also try other tig welder which are lil bit pricier than these tig welder under 500. We have researched and reviewed some other costlier tig welder under 2000 and tig welder under 1000 dollars. You are welcome to check those Awesome picks!

Slightly pricier than the Lotos Plasma cutter, the VivoHome 3 in 1 is next up on my list. I was a bit surprised by its price. Nonetheless, after putting it through its paces, I have to say it holds up well.

As its name suggests, it comes with a plasma cutter. The latter can cut metals of up to ½ inch in thickness the same as the Lotos. The unit weighs 35 pounds which are the average weight of other similar welding machines.

There is the inclusion of the non-touch pilot arc system which I loved. This system means that the cutter doesn’t come into contact with the metal. The benefit of this is that the metal being cut is able to cool quicker. Also, it improves the service life of the plasma cutter.

In terms of welding power, you can expect the same power output you would get from any other similar product. This means an output range of 10 to 200 amps. All the same, its minimum output power of 10 amps is impressive. Considering many of its competitors have a minimum output power of 15 amps.

This VivoHome welder does a better job of welding thin sheets of metal than its competitors. Also, similar to other such products, it is a 3-in-1 machine. It features a plasma cutter, a stick and a TIG welder.

why we like this model

  • Is a three-in-one unit that offers a plasma cutter, a stick welder and a TIG welder
  • Weighing about 35 pounds, it is lightweight enough for carrying
  • The pilot arc feature allows it to cut rusted metal easily and gives the plasma cutter an improved shelf life
  • Can be used for stick and TIG welding
  • Is a dual voltage input welder capable of using either a 110v or a 220v power input

  • Is a DC only welding machine and thus cannot weld aluminium
  • I don’t think it offers anything new to justify its price

For all intense and purposes, this unit offers everything that the Lotos offers. However, it is slightly pricier than the latter. Which is why it is positioned lower than its competitor.
Nonetheless, it is still a fantastic machine that costs less than $500.

Best tig welder under 500 buying guide

How do you know a tig welder is right for you? There are several factors to consider when shopping for a TIG welder. Here are the most important features that should influence your decision to buy a TIG welder.

Amperage range

The amount of power produced to heat the arc is measured in amperage. The higher the amperage the hotter the arc. However, a high amperage is not always a good thing. A higher heat output is not ideal for welding thin metals.

On the other hand, a low heat output is not ideal for welding thicker metals. For TIG welding an amperage range of between 15 and 200 amps is recommended. You get enough heat to weld thicker metals as well as thin gauge metals.

TIG welding requires an external gas tank, which can increase the overall weight of your TIG welding equipment. For on the move tasks, portability is essential. Also, if you are looking to spend $500 for a welder, then you are probably looking for something to use on the go.

A lightweight machine will be easier to carry and will not increase the weight of your welding gear.

Power input

For a welding machine to work, it must be plugged into a power source. The power source can have a voltage of 110v, 115v, 220v or even 230v. Most homes have power outlets with an input voltage of 110v. However, most industrial places have power outlets with 220 v.

To avoid problems, I recommend looking for a machine that has a dual voltage plug. This means it can be plugged into a 110v power source as well as a 220 v power source.

Duty cycle

Duty cycle is another essential feature to consider. Duty cycle determines how long you can continuously use your machine before it cools. A longer duty cycle is ideal, especially for heavy-duty tasks. For a machine that costs less than $500, a 60% duty cycle will do.

After going through the list, you have probably identified the Best tig welder under 500 based on your needs. Because when it’s all said and done, it comes down to your needs. Thus, when shopping for a TIG welder be keen on what you need.

If you need a machine to weld steel as well as aluminium go for one that runs on DC and AC. However, if steel is all you will be welding a DC only machine will do just fine. Ultimately, every welding machine has its pros and cons, depending on how you look at it.
