The 2019 version of the Everlast Power TIG 200 amps welder is among the best at its price point. A monster of a machine it earns a spot on my list due to its performance and efficiency.
Since the first version, which came in 2013, this model has seen significant improvements. The 2019 version has dual voltage capabilities. It can work with both a 120v and a 240v power source.

Using IGBT inverter technology, you can plug it into a generator on condition; it has a power output of 3500 watts. More importantly, it can weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals as it can run on AC and DC.

To say that I was impressed with this Everlast welder would be an understatement. As its name suggests, it’s a multi-process welder. As such, it can handle three different welding processes MIG, TIG, and stick welding.

While it is not the most lightweight on my list, it makes up for it with its versatility. You get 2T and 4T switches for manual or semi-automatic wire feeding for MIG welding. One feature that puts it a class above the competition is the high-frequency start and lift start.
You can choose between lift start and a touchless start for TIG welding. The latter minimizes the chances of the tungsten rod being contaminated by the weld pool. Capable of three different welding processes, it comes with nine-channel memory functions.

Some of the welders on my list earned a spot thanks to their list of features. Not the ESAB EMP welder, though. While its spec list is impressive, it is its versatility that got me interested in this model.

How Does A Tig Welder Work?

Tungsten Inert Gas welding or TIG welding is also referred to as gas tungsten arc welding. From its name, it is clear that it’s a type of arc welding. The latter is a form of welding that involves the use of an electric arc from a power supply.

The electric arc heats two metals that are to be fused at the joints. The heat generated causes the bones to melt, and the metals become fused when they cool. In TIG welding, a tungsten electrode is used to pass the electric current to the base metals being welded.

Since Tungsten has a very high melting point, the electrode used in the welding process does not melt. Instead, a separate rod called a filler rod is fed into the weld pool and melts with the base metals.

The tungsten rod used in TIG welding is non-consumable in that it does not melt into the weld pool. In other welding processes such as MIG, the electrode is consumable as it melts into the weld pool.
When heated, the metals can react with oxygen in the air causing the finished weld to be structurally weak due to the metals becoming oxidized. To prevent this, a shield of inert gas is supplied over the weld pool.

The inert gas is fed into the weld pool from a separate gas tank. For TIG welding, argon is the most common inert gas used for this purpose. However, helium is also used.

Common Mistakes to avoid when TIG welding

You have probably heard that TIG welding is challenging to master. It differs from other arc welding techniques. As such, as a beginner, there are some rookie mistakes you are bound to make. Some of the common mistakes associated with TIG welding are;

Insufficient or too much gas coverage

One common mistake is the lack of sufficient shielding gas. This can result in the finished weld being contaminated and thus being weak. This is a problem caused by too little or too much gas coverage.

As already mentioned, argon and helium are the two inert gases used for TIG welding. Using a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide will lead to contamination. Also, the gas flow rate should be set to between 15 to 20 cubic feet per hour.

Setting it lower than this will cause contamination. Similarly, setting it higher than this will also cause contamination.

Using the wrong polarity

When welding, you can either use Alternating Current or Direct Current. Alternating current is recommended for TIG welding, especially aluminum. One common mistake made is using Direct Current to weld aluminum.

This results in a contaminated bead as the Direct Current is not able to break through the oxide layer that forms on the surface of the aluminum. To break through this layer, your need Alternating Current.

Direct current is suited to welding metals such as steel, stainless steel, copper, and other ferrous metals. Knowing which current to use for which kind of metal is essential to avoid making this mistake.


The corrosion-resistant of stainless steel can be affected when you use a high amperage when welding. It can also lead to burning through in the case of aluminum. There is no way of fixing this problem, and the best thing to do is avoid it.
It is a mistake made by many using a higher amperage than is required. Different metal thicknesses require different power outputs. The thinner the metal, the low the amperage should be, and the thicker the metal, the higher it should be.
