The Best Mig Welder Buying Guide

When searching for the best MIG welder, there are a number of things you should consider. In this section, I will be looking at some of the important factors to consider.

First is output power. Not every welder will be suited to your needs. For basic home use, a power output of 100 amps is sufficient. However, I have found that a power output of at least 140 amps is better.

A 140 amps power output is standard and will give you the ability to weld thicker materials than with a 100 amps power output. Thus, to be on the safe side I recommend going for a welder with at least 140 amps of power output.

Wire feed speed

Wire feed speed refers to the rate or speed at which the mig wire is fed from the welding machine to the gun. If the speed is too low you will end up with an ugly and uneven weld. On the other hand, if it’s too fast the result will be a ton of spatter.

Welding machines give you the option of adjusting the wire feed speed to fit your welding. You may want to test the speed on scrap metal first though. A better feature is the automatic speed setting.

This automatically adjusts the speed to the relative power.

Wire size

Welding wires come in a variety of sizes. The size of the wire will have some impact on weld quality. Wires that are .023 and .030 in are best suited to welding lighter sheets of metal as they prevent burning through.

The thicker .045 in wires are more suited to welding thicker or more abundant metals. There are two common wire types the ER70S-3 and ER70S-6. The former can handle virtually all types of welding, while the latter is suited to welding dirty and rusty metals.

Overall size and portability

The performance of a MIG welding machine is important but what is equally important is how portable a welder is. A portable welder will give you the flexibility to move it around as need arises.

Also, portable welders tend to be more compact. Thus, you will not require a lot of space to store it. For home use, I recommend going for a lightweight and compact welder.

Tips for Care and Maintenance of Mig Welders

There are a few things to take into account when it comes to the care and maintenance of your mig welders. A lot goes into this process, but if you want to make sure that your equipment is in top shape for years and years of use, then these tips will be helpful.

Keep water away from your machine. This includes when it’s running and after you’re finished using it for the day. Water can cause rust, which will weaken all of its joints and gears while also making any parts that are metal look less attractive. If there is an accident with a liquid near the mig welder, immediately dry off any surfaces so they don’t soak up too much moisture.

If you need to move your equipment anywhere, be sure not to drag anything on top of or underneath it because this could scratch either surface or leave marks where nothing should be touching at all times. It may seem like dragging something over a floor would never really affect anything but trust me: just don’t do it! You’ll

Refrain from using abrasive cloths to clean your equipment. These can scratch up surfaces, which will give them a rougher surface that’s more prone to rusting in time.

Keep any welding gas away from water or other liquids as much as possible.

If your machine is in a damp area, make sure to keep it covered. This will help prevent the current from getting into all of the nooks and crannies that can’t be seen.

Make sure to change filters regularly (especially when you’re using abrasive materials). Filters are very important because they stop

Put a humidifier inside of your storage location. This will help to keep the air moist and prevent rust from forming on the equipment.

If you’re storing it for an extended period, make sure to clean off all excess oil before doing so. The less there is, the better equipped it’ll be in holding up.

The 220v MIG welder offers more power. However, for home use, it may be impractical as not many homes have a 220v power outlet. As such, it would be best to stick to a dual-voltage machine. Nonetheless, if you want a 220 V machine, you can always make the necessary arrangements to have a 220 v power outlet in your garage.
